Risograph Prints

Riso, Recipes, Remembrance

At first, the notion was just to keep a nice, illustrated notebook of my recipes. Some of the illustrations were rougher than others depending on how late in the day I did them, but I wanted to make something personal - cooking stains and all. As the notebook expanded and grew frequently-used, there were increasing requests from my friends for copies, and I wanted to share. Then, as happens with time, we began losing precious loved ones, and the recipe notebook and cards became a way of preserving memories, and the culinary skills of our predecessors. I started with two sets of recipes, the first titled “Autumn, 2019.”

Discovering Riso printing is so obvious in retrospect. I had a little Gocco printer at home, so I knew about it in theory, and I always liked designing for screen printing, which meant limited color palettes. Riso printing allows me to get rare colors, a retro layered printed look that I love, and affordable copies to share. All my printing is done at Outlet in Portland, OR whose expertise, service, and kind encouragement make them one of my favorite spots in town.
